What is dimm 2? M.2 Riser card.

DIMM.2 is an ASUS connector for the NVMe expansion card. This connector is mainly found on ASUS ROG or ASUS Maximus motherboards, thus saving space on the motherboard surface.

This DIMM.2 slot is connected to PCIe 8x lanes. The CPU can support 1×16 or 2×8, or 1×8+2×4 configurations. Thus, using the two NVME drives connected with DIMM.2, the GPU will be running at x8. The performance differences between the two speeds are minimal, but often none at all, in actuality.

Don’t install a RAM stick in this expansion card as it is only for M.2 drives.

How DIMM.2 looks?

As you may have noticed, the DIMM.2 slot looks almost like RAM slots, so it’s easy to confuse them.

To place an m.2 drive to a DIMM.2, you must use the included DIMM.2 expansion card. An expansion card should be included in the package with the motherboard; if not, contact your dealer. Otherwise, it won’t be easy to obtain.

Once you have connected the extension card, you can connect your M.2 drive to it. If you don’t have an m.2 drive and want to buy one, you can buy it from Amazon.

The good thing is that the riser has m.2 slots on both sides, so 2 m.2 drives can be placed.

  1. Hi,

I have a ASUS ROG Rampage IV Apex and I’ve been trying to find out if I install 2x Samsung Evo 970 2tb SSDs in the DIMM2 module would I bottleneck the read/write speed? As they would be sharing same lane both would be needed to perform tasks at the same time, as want to use one for my OS and the other for project files but don’t want to lose speed.

    Would really appreciate a reply!
